Zebulon Smith was born about 1758.

He enlisted in the American Revolution while a resident of Sullivan County, (and then Virginia) and served as a private with Virginia and North Carolina troops.

In 1778 he was three months in Captain Wallace's company in Colonel Isaac Shelby's regiment and three months in Captain Jonathan Webb's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment.

In the spring of 1780 he was three months in Captain William Asher's company and was a substitute for Solomon Smith.

In the fall of 1780 he was three months in Captain Jonathan Webb's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment.

In his pension application Zebulon said

that in the fall of 1781 as well as now recollected in substitution in now Sullivan County Tennessee then the State of North Carolina in the place of Samuel Smith of said County, & enrolled under Captain Toppin or Wallace & Colonel Shelby, was marched on to Santee River in South Carolina by way of Chester & Camden to Santee where he joined General Marion, where he enlisted under Colonel Moore for the Term of twelve months after having served full three months in the Militia as a substitute for the said Samuel Smith.

He was at Kings Mountain.

Immediately afterward he enrolled and served one year in Captain McKelvey's company on Colonel Moore's regiment.

On July 19, 1800 the Sinking Creek Baptist Church records say

This day Zebulon Smith is declared to be out of fellowship for as much as he has been guilty of fighting and intends to fight again.

From the fall of 1782 he served three months in Captain John Scott's company in John Sevier's regiment.

Zebulon married Sarah Dungan in 1783 in Tennessee.

Zebulon and Sarah's children included:

Samuel Smith (1783)
Rachel Smith (1785, married Thomas Smalling),
Solomon Smith (1787),
Ruth Smith (1785, married George Smith), and
Jeremiah Dungan Smith (1788, maried Elizabeth Arrants).

Zebulon Smith applied for his Revolutionary War pension on September 24, 1832 in Sullivan County. At that time he was "aged seventy-four past."

In 1823, Zebulon received money from Mary Dungan's estate.

Zebulon died in 1840.
